This book has been extremely helpful to me in understanding that I’m not alone in my fears and the things that I do to make sure the addict is ok. It also sheds light on the things that I need to back away from to give the addict their space to show that they’ve grown. I strongly recommend this book to anyone that has dealt with this nightmare, as it’s a fast read and full of valuable information and tools.

Beverly Conyers couldn’t have chosen a more apt title. I learned that my daughter was an addict when she told me she was checking herself into rehab ~ I was in shock. I knew she was unhappy, but I never knew the depths of her dispair. I was terrified to discover the truth and relieved that she would be going to a safe place. What I didn’t understand was that this was just the beginning on a path to recovery that will be hers for her lifetime. “Everything Changes” is insightful, sensitive, honest, poignant and full of sound advice. It helped me to understand that addiction is a disease and that recovery is a not a destination, but rather a journey that the entire family takes together and individually.
I highly recommend this book for anyone whose life has been touched by addiction.

This book was very well written, the author has done a tremendous job. Very well thought out and helpful. I believe this book should be made available at all treatment centers, libraries, and medical facilities. A must read for families whom are affected by this terrible disease. The benefits of this book are wonderful. I have been looking for a book such as this and will treasure the information and guidance it has given me as a gift. Our son, age 18, spent 3 months in a wonderful treatment facility for alcohlism and drug abuse. He has been sober since the day he left on April 25, 2009 and continues to do well in his recovery. Taking things one day at a time and making the best out of each moment is his attitude. I am his mom and I truly, deeply appreciate your insight for this book. Thank you and God Bless! With the fact that the show has been on for ten seasons and the proliferation of gritty and realistic programming now on TV (especially on HBO which has no restrictions), one can forget the power and shock of NYPD Blue when it premiered in 1993. David Bochco insisted that ABC allow him to use minor profanities and brief nudity to create a more realistic portrayal of the lives of New York City cops. While several stations balked at the show and refused to carry it, the show was an instant success. What really made the show so interesting was not the language or nudity, but the well written shows and first rate acting. Bochco veteran Dennis Franz plays alcoholic detective Andy Sipowicz, who was only supposed to be in the first episode, whose character is gunned down and nearly dies. Mr. Franz is superb as the volcanic Sipowicz and was rewarded with the first of his four Best Actor Emmys for the season, but the real star of the season is David Caruso. Mr. Caruso is simply magnetic as Sipowicz’s partner John Kelly. Whereas Sipowicz is a hot head, Kelly exudes cool and calm. He is passionate about what he does, but his anger boils beneath the surface where Sipowicz’s explodes. It is this dynamic between the two that makes the pairing work as one of the best in TV cop show history. Other cast members include Sherry Stringfield as Assistant D.A. Laura Michaels who is also Kelly’s ex-wife, Amy Brenneman as Janice Licalsi who is a police desk officer that is tangled up with the mob and carrying on an affair with Kelly, James McDaniel as Lt. Arthur Fancy who heads the department and is black. Sipowicz is also a racist which causes much tension between him and Fancy. Nicholas Turturro is Dt. James Martinez who is a new detective who struggles for acceptance on the job. Future series regulars, Gordon Clapp as Greg Medavoy, Sharon Lawrence as Assistant D.A. Sylvia Costas and Gail O’Grady as receptionist Donna Abandando all appear as recurring characters before all were made full time cast members in the season two. Actors like David Schwimmer, Michael Rappaport, Wendie Malik, Daniel Benzali, John Wesley Shipp and Bradley Whitford have guest roles. Season one of the show almost seems like a separate show all together due to the massive cast changes that occurred after the season. Mr. Caruso believed all the hype about him and made the mistake many actors who achieve success on a TV show, that they can become movie stars. Mr. Caruso left the show after four brief appearances in season two and never achieved the stardom that he seemed slated for. Sherry Stringfield left the show after the season to go to another show that would be even more popular, ER and Amy Brenneman also left the cast. For the one season that he was on the show though, Mr. Caruso created an indelible image and the show would continue on through the rest of the decade as one the most popular and well made shows on television.

I had never seen any of the early NYPD Blues episodes with David Caruso until now. In fact I never wanted to see them because I had never found Caruso to be an attractive or particularly talented actor and wondered why he had the conceit to leave NYPD Blue so early in his career. After watching his charismatic and convincing performance as John Kelly I now understand. This whole first season of this groundbreaking show somehow made me wistful for a time gone by.

What a joy to be able and revisit this show. I clearly recall the uproar it caused when it premiered, and it’s still pretty provocative lo these ten years on. If you follow the show, Dennis Franz has created one of the greatest characters in the history of television. Sipowicz is one for the ages, and seeing the tortured man in the initial episode, unable to know what we know…he calls his (unbeknownst to him) future wife a “p***y little b***h” within the first minutes of the first episode, for example…it’s a bit like going back in time. Again, looking at that first episode. The cast includes, of course, the outstanding David Caruso (you can’t take your eyes off him when he’s onscreen…now he’s on CSI: Miami), Amy Brennemann (Judging Amy), Sherrie Stringfield (ER), Nicholas Turturro, James McDaniel, Daniel Benzali, even David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends)…is a delight. The video transfer is eye-popping. The crisp yellows of the NY taxis, the cool blues in the station, Caruso’s hair…all delivered vividly, with killer sound as well. Oh yeah…this is great stuff.

Nice concept but fails in execution.Very uncomfortable for kids., December 20, 2012

First I’ll say that the actual quality of construction for this product is very high. The fabric is a durable nylon and the seems are sowed to last. It is a very durable product that will last much longer than your kids childhood.
With that said, I have a problem with the actual design. This product is built around the primary function of being able to easily adjust the resistance in very small increments. Then to make it usable, they threw some padding in the mix and called it a done deal. This being a pediatric product, I’m sure they tested extensively for safety, but there is little in the design to make this product in any way ergonomic for young children. There are two major shortcomings with this product, the first being the heavy duty fabric and seam around the edges. While this ensures a very durable product, it agitates young children’s sensitive skin. This is compounded by the lack of secure fitting allowing the wrist weight to slide back and forth with any type of activity. The stitched seam has a protruding edge along it’s entire length that is particularly irritating, especially after some sweating which always occurs with these products. Imagine wearing a pair of socks made of a semi firm nylon fabric with hard stitched seams, and you will get the idea of what I’m talking about.
The second and I believe more significant issue I found is with the design of the adjustable weight chambers and the weights themselves. As you can see in the photo description, there are six separate chambers that are split into two halves, and the weights are small solid bars of steel. With the weights positioned in the chambers and the wrist weight securely fastened around what will always be very small wrists, the individual weights pull tight against each other creating a solid wall on each half of the wrist weight rather than six separate chambers that mold around your child’s wrist. With the tight radius that the wrist weight must be cinched down to, this creates a vice similar to a nut cracker with multiple hard pressure points pressing on your child’s boney wrists. Yes the weights are cushioned but the cushioning does little to remove these very solid pressure points and does nothing to eliminate the vicing action that is created by the placement of the weight chambers.
Your child will enjoy the novelty and wear them for a day or two but will soon develop an aversion to them. This is a typical fitness product in which design flaws discourages rather than encourages use. I actually feel sorry for the many special needs kids that are being forced to wear these things but have the inability to communicate the details of their discomfort.

Pardon me while I dine on a healthy dose of crow. Normally, (and I’ve never hidden the fact) I dislike the “I’m in love with my brother-in-law” trope. And yet…Sydell Voeller did the impossible. She made me love her characters and believe they belonged together. It’s a testament to the emotional pull she created that I couldn’t stop turning pages. Joanna is a plucky heroine in a tough situation: her firefighter husband, Kyle, died saving kids from a fire. She’s now moved to a small town in the Pacific Northwest to rebuild her life and create a new normal. Enter Kyle’s brother, Austin, who made a promise to his brother he’s intent on keeping, despite the difficulty of being in close proximity to Jo. The author makes these two work hard for their HEA and there’s an underlying reminder to the reader about the fragility of nature and mankind’s often senseless destruction. A wonderful love story, told with sensitivity and intelligence.

Anyone who reads any of Sydell Voeller’s romances is aware of several things. One is that she is an outstanding writer. Her characterizations are excellent, not to mention she has a special way of appealing to the senses. The reader feels as if she is there. I’ve never been to Oregon, but after reading Ms. Voeller’s story, I want to get on the next plane and visit.
“Free to Love” is the story of Joanna, who lost her firefighter husband Kyle in a deadly fire. When Kyle’s brother comes to visit, she develops an attraction for him but fights this attraction. She feels that it would be a betrayal of her love for her husband to develop any warm feelings for his brother, Austin, who is a veternarian. Joanna and Austin share a love for Oregon sea life, and this brings them together. But the more circumstances bring Joanna and Austin together, the more she finds herself drawn to him.
This romance cleverly reveals the conflict between Joanna and Austin, but above all, the reader sees the enduring power of love.

Kyle & Jo are a newly married couple when Kyle a firefighter is killed in a fire. Jo trying to struggle through the loss can no longer live with the loss living where it happened & moves back to her hometown where her aunt & support is. Kyle’s family has thrown themselves into work to survive. So, before moving back she secures a job in her field of study & buys a fixer upper on the beach. Within weeks though Kyle’s brother Austin appears after months of no contact. It instantly stirs raw feelings within her & many question of why he is there, why he would track her down & feelings of guilt for not telling anyone she was going. Emotions run high for them both & sparks fly. This is such a raw emotion at times & others just a peaceful experience. I did feel at times I was getting a Eco lesson but it wasn’t heavy handed. Overall, totally enjoyed this story.

From the author: Objective: This study tested whether coordinated care management, a continuity of care intervention for substance-use disorders, improved employment among men and women on public assistance compared with usual welfare management. Method: Participants were 421 welfare applicants identified via substance-use-disorder screening and assigned via a computerized allocation program to coordinated care management (CCM; n = 232) or referral and monitoring practices in usual care (UC; n = 189). Substance use, treatment attendance, job training and search activities, and employment outcomes were assessed for 1 year after baseline. Results: Men were more likely to be working than women overall. Among women, CCM clients increased their employment over time, whereas UC clients remained stable at very low employment levels. There were no treatment effects on employment for men. Also among women only, greater substance-use-disorder treatment attendance and abstinence in the first 6 months of CCM predicted higher rates of later employment. Job training activities were low and did not differ by condition between either gender. Conclusions: Findings are consistent with previous research supporting the effectiveness of case management for improving abstinence, which leads to employment gains, among substance-using women on public assistance. In contrast, various mandated elements of welfare-to-work programs for substance users–treatment attendance, case management, job training–did not improve employment rates for men. Implications of study results for designing effective welfare-to-work interventions in a post-welfare-reform era are discussed.
